THE FIRE

On July 24th, 2016 the home I built and lived in for 30 years burned to the ground during the Soberanes fire. I lost my studio and everything in it: easels, canvases, paint, photos and tools. We got many paintings out when we evacuated but very little else.  My partner Jesse, an artist working in metal lost a lifetime’s worth of tools. I had no insurance despite numerous attempts/cancellations. So we have moved into the Carmel apartment in which I stored all my paintings not currently in galleries. At present there are around 60 of them and it is rather crowded in this small dwelling.

I love to build and over 30 years this home on Green Ridge at about 2000’ above the sea became a micro-paradise that inspired all who saw and loved it. Though it will never be the same,  we want to rebuild something on this now barren hillside, in these now barren mountains. It will grow back and be green again in time. When we finally were allowed to visit our home, we found an extraordinary flattened, melted, twisted world of human made objects, many unrecognizable,  and some , like pots I’d made, untouched by flames. The pond full of waterlilies and goldfish is still intact, with all the local wildlife seeking water and green things to eat hanging around. There was damage to the cap of our well and no electricity is available because the poles burned, so one of our first projects will be to repair the wellhead and acquire a generator powerful enough to run the pump, then get and place a new watertank and start laying pipe, so the pond can be maintained as a source of water for all these creatures whose homes have been lost too.  Of course this is only a place to start what will be a very long, expensive and labor intensive endeavor.

What follows is an inventory of  some of the paintings I have here in my Carmel apartment (though there are many in Carmel Art Association Gallery, The Gallery at Ventana and Carmel Bay Company. ) These paintings represent many different series I’ve done through the years and so they are not all done in the same style. What they do have in common is that they were all painted in a place that no longer exists - a place of much beauty and richness and shared happiness. My wish is that, like a Phoenix bird,  some beautiful, transformed and as yet unknown magical place will rise from the ashes.
